THE TESTING OF ABRAHAM; A THEOLOGY OF SUFFERING
GENESIS 22:1-14

As we continue our study in Genesis 22, we will set once again the context of events in Abraham's life at the chapter's beginning. Picking up a few thoughts concerning the reality that God tested Abraham (and He tests all who believe in Him) and that He gave Abraham a command to be obeyed, we will proceed to the outcome of that test and command. The outcome was that Abraham experienced trial and suffering. At this point we will move to more of a topical approach and the trials and sufferings that Christians experience. Why do Christians suffer? What types of suffering do we encounter in life? What is the most intense type of suffering we may encounter, here, in life's journey? Looking at examples from Scripture, we will explore some solutions to these questions. However, this being our first installment on the topic of suffering, we will draw to conclusion in more depth answers in our next study on Genesis 22.

Today's message comes from Genesis 22:2-14. In the text we find three themes interwoven throughout the passage. They are: A Predominating Providence, A Proven Faith, and Prototypes Revealed. We will begin our study by touching upon two of these three themes.

As with any study of the Scriptures, we want to discover firstly, what does the text reveal about God and secondarily, what does the text reveal about God's salvation purposes. Therfore, I will give a brief and partial introduction to the Providence of God. It is a term little used today. What does it mean, and how does the Providence of God impact the world and our daily lives. That will be our departure point. Then we will look at the testing of Abraham's faith. The challenge set before him was one beyond our comprehension. What would it have been like to be in his sandals? We will explore that together.

As always, it is my pleasure that this sermon will be a blessing to you see if as an encouragement to your faith as you daily pursue our Lord.
