January 19, 2014 | Pastor John Bayles | When Darkness Shadows Grace | John 6:16-24

The miracle of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee is recorded in Matthew, Mark, and here in the Gospel of John. Because of this coverage we have a synoptic view, that is we can expand our understanding of what happened that dark, stormy night from three viewpoints. It is a short passage and not difficult to understand - it is a miracle of Jesus walking on the water to save His disciples during a violent storm that occurred at night on the Sea of Galilee.

As we uncover the emotions of the players in this text today, may we grasp and assimilate a new confidence in who Jesus Christ is in our lives, even in the the midst of wrong assumptions of His intentions, wrong views of His person, and blind fears of the circumstances of life which suddenly grip our hearts. Circumstances in which we should have a firm confidence in God’s providence and provision, yet, because of the remaining presence of our sin nature, we become caught in old patterns of doubt and fear.

Today let us pray that God will give us a firm trust in Him, even when the sudden, violent, storms of life fall down upon us. Let us look at Jesus and find our confidence in Him - the wind and waves will remain, but may renewed trust take their place.
