February 24, 2013 | John Bayles | The Message of Foolishness and Power (1 Corinthians 1:18)

Wolf Kahn | Two Roads Diverged, 2010, oil on canvas, 14 x 24 inches

The default condition of humanity is sin. Every human person is born into the environment of sin, because humanity is fallen - from the time of Adam and Eve until today. We can ignore it, deny it, or scorn it as foolishness, but it continues to be our plight. We live in a world of self-consciousness, self-protection, self-preservation, and self-love. We are lost in the blindness and darkness of self. As Jesus said, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness” (Matthew 6:22,23).

In today’s message, we will be presented with two pathways, one that leads to light and the other continues along on the way of the world of darkness. The two paths converge at the intersection of conversion. And conversion does not come by a decision of the will, not by an inheritance, not by the vicarious desire of another person, not by the emergence of a natural desire, and not by a human ability. It is bestowed by the powerful gift of faith in the presence of the message of grace. To those who will continue on the path of darkness, it is a message of foolishness. To those who are awakened by its power, it is a message of salvation. Many are called to it, but few are chosen to walk in this light of life. May the message of the cross empower your soul today and deliver you into everlasting light.
