March 3, 2013 | John Bayles | Repent, Lest You Too Perish (Hosea 5:8-7:1)

In today's message we will hear again the awful judgement of God against Israel. They are called a nation of prostitution and worshippers of vile gods. Even the honored priesthood of Israel has turned away from the Lord and is leading people into the depths of depravity for personal profit. The message, though understandable, may seem quite remote and irrelevant to us who live in the new covenant of grace, covered by the blood of Jesus Christ, and living at peace with God or sins forgiven.

So what is the point for us today? It is that we should take the admonition of Jesus in Luke 13:1-5. Jesus reflects upon two incidents in which people met a sudden death in the first case because of persecution and in the second because of a natural disaster. In the causal world of that day, they were viewed as ones who deserved the judgement because of some sin they had committed. They did bad, they got bad. But Jesus surprised them by stating, "I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish." His shocking words have an application for us today as well.
