July 7, 2013 | John Bayles | The Prologue of John: Before the Earth Declared His Glory (John 1:1-5)

In this prologue of the Gospel of John we find a very similar use of language to that of Genesis 1:1 and following. As in Genesis 1:1 (and in all of the scriptures), there is no explanation or treatise on the existence of God - it is a presupposition, it is assumed to be true already. However, unlike the Genesis narrative in which Moses launches into the account of the creation of the earth and its surrounding universe, here John touches the same point of time, yet launches backward into the timeless existence of the Godhead before the creation of the earth.

Under the inspiration of God the Holy Spirit, we travel with him into the micro fabric of existence before time, before creation, before the fall, before our self-awareness, sin, and depravity. God the Holy Spirit magnifies the most explicit example of revelation (the uncovering), and here He reveals the beginning of inspiration from the self-existent One. Without this revelation we are left with a Gospel that is shallow, lifeless, worldly, and centered in humanity merely aided by God. If we miss this element of revelation, we miss the very essence of all that will follow: the creation, the person of Jesus, and the nature redemption at its highest reality. May the Lord help us today to be touched by what touched the Apostle. May the Holy One breathe out to us today, what He breathed into the Scriptures.
