August 4, 2013 | John Bayles | The Prologue of John: Jesus Christ - God? Man? God-man? (John 1:1-18)

When we look at Jesus we must remember that His nature cannot be divided. The relationship of the second member of the triune God (the Word) and the man (Jesus of Nazareth) are indivisible. The one is in perfect unity with the other. John's purpose, and ours is not to show that God is not man or that man is not God, but that God has uniquely come to dwell in man in the person of Jesus Christ. He is the God-man.

This unity is not simply intellectual, in that we acknowledge the idea of the Son of God dwelling in the son of man. But it is a living reality and a unity that existed in time and space in the past and continues to exist in heaven now. It is a unity that manifested the presence of God Himself to the earth two thousand years ago and presented a whole man - Jesus - born with a whole nature, not tainted by the sin of Adam.

Jesus was then presented as a holy, a worthy, atoning sacrifice for our sins to a just and holy God. Without the presence of God, the man would not have succeeded in this mission. The man was not on his own, and God was not on His own. They were joined together incarnate, in flesh. This Sunday we will look again at this mysterious and amazing revelation given to us by Jesus through the Apostle John.
